Is the Macintosh better than Wintel?

When the iBook was announced in July 1999, I was impressed with the price Apple had chosen, but felt at the gut level that the base machine was rather skimpy for the money. To confirm my suspicions, I thoroughly investigated the prices for comparable Wintel notebook computers at that time. The results of that survey are in a Comparison of Notebook Prices.
